Daily Responsibility

Some of you may have noticed that I have not been particularly punctual in my blogging over the last month or two. Lets just say that I am committed to taking "AHorseADay" literally, no matter how hard it might be sometimes to blog about something new every single day. Any suggestions, folks?

Home Again, Home Again.

I have left paradise and returned to the traditional brick buildings of the Washington & Lee Campus. I already miss the sandy beaches of St. Thomas.

The first image was taken by Mallory, and the second was taken by me. Despite the poor quality of the photos, I enjoy their subject matter. I am really going to miss the beach.

Black And White

A friend of mine commented that he would like to see today's photo in black and white. 

This would have worked better if Thunder's blaze hadn't been as washed out in the original exposure. I also wish the lighting had been such that his eye would have been more defined by contrast.

Snow Day

My first snow day! One class is cancelled, and the other two are shortened and delayed. Yes!

I really like the softness of the subject of this photo. I also like the fact that you can't see all of his face, but you can see more than just his eye. It makes the angle more interesting.

Galoshes

Galoshes is a very funny word. So is refrigerator.

A fun portrait that I took of the back of Thunder's head during a trail ride. Also, a pretty view of senic West County.

Manual Labor

There is a part of me that misses working in the darkroom. There is something inherently satisfying about watching your own film become a photo on paper in the chemicals in the red semi-darkness.

Again, both of these photos are photos of the black and white originals (one of the curses of living in a dorm; no scanner.) The first photo is interesting, because the sunlight casts shadows of Thunder's forelock on his face. I don't particularly enjoy the effect, but I still love the softness of his expression. I like the angle in the second photo, because it takes a moment for the viewer to figure out what's going on. The mood is very playful, and reminds me very much of him.

In Loving Memory

Today in the mail I received a letter from my mother that included 3 photos and a lock of tailhair of a miniature horse named Tempest, who lived down the road from my house in Sebastopol. Tempest passed away last week.

Codeine-Induced Dreams

My cough syrup for nighttime has codeine in it to help with sleeping, but the effect of the cough syrup on my dreams had the opposite effect. Dreams that strange make it hard to sleep.

These three black and white photos of my first horse, Thunder, were taken last summer with my manual camera. In the first photo, I really like the head on angle because it feels a little distorted because the photo doesn't include the ears or the nose. In the second photo, I like the shallow depth of focus. The third photo gives a wider view of the whole scene, brining the elements in the first two photos together.
